This collection bronze
and silver skulls are a continuation of the study of cire perdue or
lost wax casting by
David Hyde
(Verdigris's proprietor). Rubber moulds are made using found animal skulls (in this case a frog, lizard and bird) and wax is injected into the moulds to create extremely accurate wax
versions of the skulls. The wax version are then embedded in a jacket of plaster which is heated in a kiln to over 700 degrees
centigrade to completely incinerate the wax leaving a skull shaped void in the plaster. Molten metal in drawn into the void using a vacuum system or a centrifuge. When the metal has solidified the plaster jacket is broken away to reveal a metal skull that has
captured every last nuance and detail of the original. This is
painstakingly and meticulously hand
polished.
