The owner of this bed requested a detailed, yet understated design with "presence". These criteria are satisfied by the visual weight of the
steel used, combined with the bed's
joinery. Its uprights are
forged from one and a half inch thick steel bar with the finials made by "upsetting" this bar.
The feature joinery is based on traditional woodworker's
mortise and tenons.
Hot punched holes are used for the
mortises and the forged tenons are
riveted over and given a satin
polish to act as a counterpoint to the darker tones of the
burnished and waxed steel. The bed is a satisfying blend of a contemporary design and traditional
blacksmithing skills.
