S93: Galvanised Steel Tree Sculpture

"... stylish, elegant, and bespoke metalwork ..."

Affleck's Palace Manchester

This dramatic metal galvanised steel tree sculpture was commissioned for the side of Affleck's Palace; a shopping arcade in Manchester with an eclectic mix of small independent stalls and boutiques aimed at the student market. The spreading growth of the tree suggests youthful and inquisitive exploration.

Its larger branches were formed from sheet steel which was textured to resemble tree bark. After being textured, the steel was curved around bespoke shaped stakes and mandrels to make light yet sculptural branches. The leaves were also made from sheet steel which was and beaten and hammered to shape to give them "life" and character. The steel was then galvanised to prevent corrosion. This gives the tree its bright shiny finish. However, over the course of a few years the zinc will slowly weather and turn matt grey.
