These detailed
and elegant stair railings were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and its principles of traditional craftsmanship and simple design.
Their design reflects the location of the cottage on the mouth of a Welsh estuary, its garden is practically on the shore and features a view of Harlech Castle and Portmerion across the Afon Dwyryd. The stylised wave motifs and the path these take as they cascade and flow down the stairs pick up on this setting. Traditional
blacksmithing techniques were used to hand
forge the waves and their subtle tones and the rich
textures of the forged steel were enhanced by a
burnished and waxed finish.
Clean lines and expressive joinery are signature detailing of the Arts and Crafts
movement and can be seen in the use of satin polished bronze
collars as an accent to the design, and the fixing of the railings to the stairs.
