In many respects, this Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired rose arch is a work in progress.
Although the metalwork is fully made,
the climbing roses and clematis have only recently been planted... and its rusty weathered finish has only just started to
develop!
David
will post new photographs as both the rust and roses bloom and the plants entwine and envelop the arch.
The unprotected steel is being allowed to rust and weather naturally, and develop its
character with time. Despite the rust, the arch
will still last many decades because of its solid and heavy duty steel sections. Traditional blacksmithing skills are on display throughout the arch.
These include its crisp precise joinery, the elegant taper of the central motif and the graceful transition from square to round cross section of its curved elements.
