This collection of stylised bronze birds by David Hyde is a study in the patination of bronze.
The sculptures are carefully heated whilst specially chosen chemicals are brushed, or
stippled onto the metal. Gradually a thin and complex layer of coloured oxides, sulphides and carbonates develop on the surface as it reacts to the applied chemicals.
This process is repeated many times to form a patina with a layered and nuanced range of tones and patterns.
Each patina is utterly unique and its formation depends on the strength and formulation of the chemicals, the amount of heat applied and technique used to apply the chemicals.
David is continually experimenting with the art and science of patination whilst
developing a diverse and comprehensive library of finishes.
